Hearing Impaired Advancements

We have seen enormous changes in the help for hearing loss or the last few years. Do you remember seeing drawings in your childhood storybooks of people holding a big curved cone to their ear to help them hear? Compare that to the equipment or surgery available now. Hearing aids are almost invisible and custom fit and other aids are available to help people with hearing loss. Amplified telephones, doorbells, alarm clocks, and other assistive devices are now available to help people with hearing loss. There are many options to help meet the need and recent technological advances have improved the listening and amplification quality.

 

For example, an inline amplifier can be installed on the telephone or a portable amplifier can be attached to the handset and hearing a telephone conversation just might be possible again. This is important for all of us and for someone with a hearing loss, the telephone may be the link that allows them to remain at home independently.

 

Hearing in a room crowded with people talking has always been a challenge for all of us, and especially so for those with hearing loss and for those developing equipment to help with hearing loss. A personal sound amplifier can be very helpful for many people.  These small units have a microphone and can pick up sounds in a theatre, meetings, lectures, a worship service, listening to the TV or just a simple conversation. Some of them can dampen background noise and focus on the person speaking. They are available with a variety of headphones, earbuds or neckloops and some of these can be attached to a hearing aid. 

 

Wireless FM systems have made it possible for students to attend regular classes. If the lecturer wears a clip-on microphone the student's receiver can amplify the sound and deliver it by headphones or a neckloop connected to their hearing aid. The same type of technology is available to help with listening to your TV, radio or MP3 player. Some of the systems are designed to be flexible with various add on options for different needs and occasions. This can help maintain an active social life. One system has a transmitter for audio signals from the TV, radio or MP3 player directly to the receiver, which produces sound without delay to a hearing aid. It has a microphone for use with conversations and a Bluetooth microphone that will deliver mobile phone calls directly to your hearing aid. These devices have simple controls and are easy to set up and use. New and better technology is being developed all the time, but we have come a long way from the handheld hearing cone pictured in our storybooks.

Assistive Listening Devices For Hearing Impaired

Assistive listening devices are devices which are intended to allow people with disabilities to perform tasks independently and to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.

Assistive Technology devices help people access technology when they might not otherwise be able to. This include things like screen readers, magnification software, voice command software, and extra-large keyboards, along with software which helps people navigate their computers or use the Internet. Assistive technology can also include devices which help people communicate if they have difficulty speaking, and devices which are intended to facilitate communication with people who are developmentally disabled. With improvements in the field of technology, numerous examples of assistive technology are constantly emerging.

The goal of assistive devices is to empower people with disabilities so that they can engage in tasks they would like to perform without needing to ask someone for help. Without an assistive device, someone might have trouble doing something, whether it's opening a jar of pasta sauce or talking with a friend over the phone. Assistive devices promote independence by creating solutions which allow people to do things without having to rely on someone else.

An Assistive listening device (ALD) is used to provide hearing ability for people in a variety of situations. A common usage is to aid people who are hard of hearing. The ALD may be used to help people hear televisions and other audio devices and also to help people hear speech through public address (PA) systems such as in church or at a lecture.

The assistive listening device is usually used as a system where the audio source is broadcast wirelessly over an FM frequency. The person who is listening may use a small FM Receiver to tune into the signal and listen at their preferred volume.

Some people may wonder why a person who is chronically hard of hearing does not pursue medical treatment to improve their condition or obtain a hearing aid. There are many possible answers. Hearing aids can be prohibitively expensive for older people on limited incomes or those without sufficient health insurance. A professional audiologist can assess the level of hearing loss and suggest various treatments, but cannot force a client to obtain a hearing aid or undergo delicate surgery. Some people may also understand their hearing is not as good as it once was, but admitting such a decline can be socially or professionally embarrassing for them.

Personal computers can easily be customized to accommodate the deaf. All you need can be found in any good store that sells computers and computer equipment. For hearing impaired individuals, the phone seems to have just been created yesterday. Now people are able to call anybody who has their own computer, chat room, monitor and keyboard. Since the main way the information is being seen is through text, and the main way to communicate is through text, it's easy.

There is no sound, so hearing is not required. The main source of technology the deaf have used for communicating is TDDs (Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf) that are nothing more than word processors that exchange information. TDDs usually do not work with computers, but there are some companies coming out with translation software for them. Most people with computers do not buy these programs unless they have a friend or relative who is deaf.

I once had a conversation with a man who had been hearing impaired most of his life, and he shared a story with me. He responded that he learned to read at the early age of three, at the same point he lost his hearing, and did not ever lose the ability to speak, but he is currently able, through new technology, to conduct conversations with those that hear without passing notes or reading lips. He can conduct interviews with writers on the phone, just like I am doing. His familiarity with TDD has been growing each day; he now talks to his wife daily regarding the news headliners, reserving hotels and booking train rides.

However, because TDDs are usually restricted to deaf person, this program is not a major aspect in my own life. I'm not trying to put them down, they are the first major step into the world of electronic communication for the deaf, and the microcomputer is next. I asked if TDDs are really needed by deaf people who have a computer?

It is a pretty hard process to make computers TDD compatible at the moment. It is necessary to use special software and hardware to make them compatible. There are plenty of people that have TDDs and the integration will be a slow process, but they won't be going away anytime soon. They are unlikely to invest in a microcomputer instead. It's also cheaper to buy a TDD at less than 0.

What should a hearing impaired person hope to find in a computer, and do they need to be aware of any required specifications? The answer was quite simple, nothing more than that which a normal person needs. I asked if there was anything he would like to say to deaf readers or people who deal with those who are deaf in regards to computers. One thing would be that buying the modem should be the first peripheral, even before getting printer. Another recommendation would be to consider getting a laptop or whichever model is the most reasonably priced one, as this may be their first or only computer.

If they have an emergency, they can call CB to ask someone to conduct a voice call on their behalf. This is somewhat theoretical, as it might be difficult to convince the other CBers that it was a serious situation, not just a prank. Furthermore, I know of a brand new bulletin board network being established in different cities for a sort of test. In this way, the hearing impaired are given access to an emergency phone center as well as information about other services.

There is also a device that will attach a laptop to a voice synthesizer, but I am not very familiar with this technology. If they work well, it wouldn't be a far reach to think the synthesizer could attach to a phone. However, the deaf person using this would not know if someone had answered or what their reply was. Due to the fact that most deaf people have the skills required for computers, i.e. ability to see; and are able to acquire, like typing, the job market is big, and growing daily, for deaf people who are able to work with computers. Some of the best jobs to look into for the hearing impaired are programming, word processing, and data processing, where there is no phone interaction required to work.

Hearing Impaired Phones Make Life Much Easier For All of Us

Many people have friends and relatives that have a hearing impairment, and you might be just one of them. This means that you know how difficult life for the hearing impaired people around you is. Giving people hearing impaired phones as gifts and presents for birthdays or other occasions is perfect because it shows you care.

However how do you know what to go for, which one is the perfect gadget to buy? Particularly if you are not affected by this problem, you won't exactly know what the people's needs are in the first place. So here are a few tips to get you started in understanding the needs of these individuals and why such a phone will make life so much easier for them.

First of all you have to realize that their main challenge is hearing phone conversations. If somebody calls them, they might simply not understand what the other person is saying due to different voice pitch frequencies, for example.

However many people are also looking for additional features in these phones, such as extra light helping with any visual impairment, and also something to help with lack of dexterity, such as offering extra large buttons to press the numbers on.

If your friend or relative has a moderate hearing loss, all they need is a phone in the range of 20-40db. People with mild hearing loss will only need something that gives strength of 15-30 db. However if the hearing loss is excessive, you can easily go for anything that amplifies up to 50db.

One problem that hearing impaired individuals face is their inability to hear well high or low pitched noises and sounds. Some telephones help by having a feature that allows one to adjust the tone on the phone.

The location is also important. Will the phone be used at home or outside. Will it also need to have extra cordless phones coming with the original set? These will have a specific range that they can operate away from the main set, so it is important to know where the phones will be used.

If the person also needs extra visual or audio help, there are telephones with adjustable ringer loudness that also have bright light flashing on them to notify of any incoming calls.

Price is another consideration. The more expensive a telephone is, the more features it has and also higher amplification levels. The basic ones, starting at 15-30db are not expensive, you can find a reasonable quality one for less than 0. Top end phones, of course, will cost more. I've seen some come as high as 0 and more. These had 50db amplification levels.

Another very important aspect of helping hearing impaired people is regarding them waking up in the morning. Not being able to hear the regular alarm clock is quite a hindrance for many.

Phone Ringer Flashing Light Amplified Hearing Impaired

Some people are born into this world without any complications. Sadly, there are those who are born deaf or who will soon suffer from deafness problems. That sucks and if you happen to meet someone who has this problem, don't feel sorry for them or treat them differently because that is the last thing they want from you.

If you meet someone who is deaf, ask them how they prefer to communicate with you. You have to remember that although deaf people cannot hear you, they can lip read so you have to talk to them slowly so they can understand what you are saying.

For the males, one problem in communicating with a deaf person could be your facial hair because some of them will not be able to understand you especially if you have a mustache or beard. If this happens, try using the other ways to communicate with them like sign language if you are familiar with it but if you don't, try writing it down so they can respond.

In the event that you need to get their attention, wave your hand, tap their shoulder gently, flicker the lights or stop on the floor because the vibration will tell them if someone is around. Since they can't hear you, never shout because you are just wasting your breath.

When you talk to a deaf person, make sure that your face is in the line of view. This will make it easy for them to respond should they want to read your lips. If the person appears to be lost, ask if they understood what you said. If not, repeat it slowly this time.

Some deaf people that you might talk to may not speak English very well. If you have a hard time understanding what they said, tell them to kindly write down what they are trying to say.

Deaf people are just as hard working as people who can hear. Although they won't be able to answer the phone, they can be tasked to do other things so give them a little credit and accept them for who they are.

If at work you have to speak to other members in a group, take the time out to make sure they understand what is going on because for most deaf people, they are used to interacting on a one to one level.

The same goes if you are hanging out with your friends who can hear on their own and you decide to bring your deaf friend along.

The day may come when you encounter a deaf person accompanied by an interpreter. If you have to communicate, always refer to them in the first person tense. Failure to do this is offensive to the deaf person given that he or she is present.

How we treat people who are deaf should not be different to people we communicate with normally. Why? Because deaf people have feelings and the only difference between both of you is the fact that one person can hear while the other can't.

With that, you should speak slower, be patient and understanding with these individuals. If you take the time to know them, you might enjoy hanging out with them and forget that he or she is deaf.

When Bluetooth technology was introduced, it changed the Information Age for good.
